Cancer Care
At Longevity Medical Health Center we offer a variety of ways in which a patient may incorporate alternative and integrative medicine into their cancer treatment plans. It is our philosophy that an optimal treatment plan for cancer should provide much more than a diagnosis and a single course of treatment. All of the physicians in our office are practitioners of holistic medicine and believe that to be most effective a treatment plan must consider all aspects of patients' lives, including both the body and the mind. The optimal treatment plan should include a thorough review of patients' history, their present situation, and where they expect to be in the future. Through listening to our patients and hearing their concerns, questions, and goals, our doctors are able to provide a comprehensive and individualized plan that is based on each patients' particular needs.
Many patients choose to utilize alternative/integrative treatments along with their conventional care. Our physicians have the training and experience required to safely administer naturopathic therapies along with patients' conventional medicines. Naturopathic therapies can be used to alleviate treatment related side effects, improve patients' nutritional and hydration status and to improve the functioning of the immune system. Additionally, many therapies can be used to increase the efficacy of conventional treatments, thereby improving patients' outcomes. Frequently used therapies include targeted supplementation,
IV therapy,
acupuncture, and
massage. We also utilize
specialty laboratory testing and
imaging to ensure that patients' are receiving the most efficacious therapies.
Patients may also elect to pursue naturopathic therapies after they have received conventional care and eliminated their cancer. Patients in remission may experience persistent treatment related side effects such a neuropathy, memory problems, gastrointestinal problems, or anxiety. A variety of therapies and specialized testing options are available at our office, which can be used to address these problems. Another important aspect of naturopathic treatment during remission is an investigation into potential causes of cancer re-occurrence. Those things that may increase the likelihood of cancer reoccurring, and may be responsible for the cancer initially developing, are typically referred to as risk factors. There are a number of established risk factors for the development of cancer including specific nutritional deficiencies, exposure to some sort of environmental or occupational toxin, high anxiety levels, and other aspects of lifestyle. By identifying any potential risk factors patients' may have, it becomes possible to construct a plan aimed at eliminating or reducing these factors and minimizing their potential impact, ie. preventing re-occurrence.
Another way that patients may choose to use naturopathic treatments is in disease prevention. It has been estimated that up to 85% of cancers are due to some sort of risk factor other then genetics. Cancers that may at first glance appear to "run in family" may really have their cause in a shared exposure or some other non-genetic risk factor shared by the family. Over the past 20 years there has been a great deal of medical research published on the topic of cancer causing risk factors. At Longevity Medical Health Center our physicians have designed special cancer risk assessments based on the latest research and testing methods.
