There is no better way to treat a disease than to avoid it in the first place. This statement has never been more accurate than it is today, as the rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are all on the rise and expected to continue rising in the future.
Thankfully, all three of these diseases, as well as many others, are largely preventable.
At Longevity Medical Health Center we recognize the great potential of preventative medicine. In fact, the importance of promoting prevention is one of the six core principles guiding the practice of naturopathic physicians. This belief in the power of prevention has resulted in naturopathic physicians being considered the experts in disease prevention. All of the
physicians at our office have been extensively trained in preventative and lifestyle medicine, and incorporate a four-step plan for preventive health into their treatment plans.
The first step in prevention is identifying any factors that may be increasing a person's risk. The most common risk factors include dietary deficiencies, excess stress and anxiety, lack of exercise, and environmental toxins. Special attention is always given to each person's health history in order to help determine which risk factors are most likely present. During this step laboratory tests are often used to assess, confirm, and quantify each risk factor.
Once a person's risk factors have been identified, the second step of our approach is constructing a treatment plan aimed at reducing or eliminating the disease risks. Treatment plans may include specific supplements, diets, or detoxification programs, depending on each patient's individual needs.
The third step in our preventative medicine approach consists of follow-up and the re-assessment of risk factors. Through periodic consultation and quantitative re-testing, it is possible to observe a reduction in risk factors, as well as an increase in health and vitality.
The development of a maintenance protocol is the final step of our program. Through the process of eliminating and reducing their risk factors, patients learn how to incorporate healthy lifestyle choices into their daily routine. Annual assessments can be done to ensure the continued reduction and elimination of disease-related risk factors.
Some commonly encountered risk factors include:
High Cholesterol or blood sugar
Elevated anxiety
Standard American Diet (SAD)
Heavy Metals, ie mercury and lead
Pesticide exposure
